It was on land owned by the Earl of Berkeley that the North Cotswold Hunt first carried out their sport of foxhunting in 1772. Almost a century later the Earl of Coventry was so keen for the North Cotswold Hunt to continue that he funded it himself. He became their first Master in 1867 and just 3 years later the Hunt committee began promoting their own race meetings. That inaugural meeting in 1870 was deemed to be sufficiently successful for the venture to be repeated for the next 2 years. However, in 1873 Lord Coventry stepped down as Master and the races ceased, with the final meeting taking place on Tuesday 30th April 1872.
